plage

A bright emission region in the solar chromosphere. Plages coincide with faculae in the photosphere beneath them and an enhancement of the corona above, from which there is increased X-ray, extreme ultraviolet and radio emission. These are all regions where the vertical component of the magnetic field is strong. They are characteristic of active regions on the Sun.
